The King-Devick Test requires that a yearly (or semi-yearly in the case of Subjects 9 and younger) Baseline be established so that the Subject can later be evaluated against their previous performance. A Baseline Test is a Pre-Injury Baseline Test score determined by following the Baseline Testing protocol which establishes a Baseline Test score as the faster of two error free trials. The Baseline will be the faster of the two times. If a Baseline is expired it is no longer valid.

Note:
Before running a K-D Test, the device must be calibrated see Calibration for K-D Tests for more info.

  1. In order to begin the Baseline Test, navigate to the Subject (if you are having trouble finding the Subject select the K-D logo in the top left, All Subjects, and then View Team and you can then search the Subject's name). Select the Baseline Test button to begin testing, or the Renew Baseline button for Subjects with an expired K-D Baseline.

  2. The first screen the user is presented with is a slider explaining how to administer the test, a link to download a Test Set Score Sheet, and an option to select which Test Set will be used. There are 3 Test Sets available. Test sets are the same King-Devick task with different number sets to minimize memorization. As the test Administrator, be sure to have the corresponding Test Set Score Sheet to follow along for errors. Click Next to proceed through the slider, and Start Test when you and the Subject are ready to begin.

If the Subject is under 10 years old and struggling to successfully complete a Baseline trial, this screen includes an option to reduce the number of cards down to one or two as needed.

  3. The Demonstration Card is displayed, and no active, automatic timing is occurring. The test Administrator should explain the task to the Subject. When both the test Administrator and Subject are ready to begin, the test Administrator should select the screen to control the automatic timing and advance to Test Card 1. The Subject should immediately begin reading aloud the numbers and the test Administrator should follow along on their Scoresheet to mark any errors. The Subject should read aloud the numbers from left to right on the cards as shown on the Demonstration Card as quickly as they can without making errors. This should be done without using a hand or finger to follow the number pattern.

  4. On the Test Results page, enter the Tester Initials, the total number of errors, and any comments. Click "Continue" to proceed or select "Cancel Test" to cancel and discard this result.

  5. Baseline testing requires two error-free test trials. The Results screen will indicate if a Baseline has been established yet, or if further testing is required. Confirm test results and click “Save Test” to save the result in the Subject’s K-D Test History and continue testing or save the Baseline if it has been established.
